GABRIEL GARCÍA MÁRQUEZ

[Colombia]

BORN IN Aracataca, Colombia, Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014) grew up with his maternal grandparents. His grandmother told him stories with supernatural elements that she believed to be true, and which later influenced his own fantastical fiction. After going away to school, García Márquez became a journalist and remained one even after his renown as a novelist. In 1967 he published One Hundred Years of Solitude, one of the most popular and influential novels of the twentieth century. García Márquez won the Nobel Prize in 1982, when Colombia would have liked to persecute him for his political connections to Cuba and his literary friendship with the dictator Fidel Castro. García Márquez married Mercedes Barcha Pardo in 1958, and they were together forever after; they had two children, whom they raised in Mexico, his adopted second country. The enchanting story “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” (in Spanish, “El ahogado más hermoso del mundo”) was first published in 1968 and was translated for English publication in 1972.
